<\/span>researched weed suppression at the Genesee Mine reclamation site called the East Wetland.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">Eckehart is a forester and reclamation specialist.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">For his research, he planted a mix of balsam poplar and willows around the small lake<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">created after coal mining was finished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">On the uplands, he planted aspen and white spruce seedlings.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">But as Eckehart explains, competition from weeds and grasses can seriously impede<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9pt;\">the growth of the young tree seedlings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size:9.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;font-family:&quot;Trebuchet MS&quot;\">ECKEHART MARENHOLTZ: <\/span><\/strong><em><u><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/u><\/em><em><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">For example, with the deciduous species, with aspen, simply shading, so removing the light from the trees is probably one of the bigger factors.&nbsp; There could also be below ground competition and there could also be competition for nutrients and for water.&nbsp; So when we were planning this new reforestation area, we were looking at using two main strategies to deal with the competition.&nbsp; We wanted to plant trees that were physically bigger than the weeds would be in the first season and&nbsp; test different ways of suppressing the weeds.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:9.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;font-family:&#10;&quot;Trebuchet MS&quot;;color:black\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';
