SmileSonica Inc recently received approval from Health Canada to market its medical device to orthodontists.


Called Aevo, the device helps accelerate the movement of teeth for patients wearing braces.  

It consists of a sophisticated mouth piece that is connected to a small hand held electronic box.  

It’s worn for 20 minutes a day.

And as company founder Cristian Scurtescu explains, Aevo works with the use of ultrasound.

CRISTIAN SCURTESCU:  <\/span>  It is low intensity, pulse ultrasound system.  So the patient has to place in their mouth this kind of mouthguard that inside has a number of electronic components that are emitting this therapeutic ultrasound waves.  These waves are delivered to the bones supporting the roots of the teeth and stimulate the remodeling of this bone.  It’s called alveolar bone. So the teeth that have to move in the new position to obtain the smile the patients want would do that in an accelerated fashion.  <\/span>

CRISTIAN SCURTESCU says SmileSonica developed,  commercialized and now manufactures the Aevo System in Edmonton.  The company is already selling the system in Europe and Australia.
