{"id":1170,"date":"2012-05-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-08T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2018\/02\/01\/innovation-anthology-472\/"},"modified":"2018-02-25T21:30:35","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T21:30:35","slug":"innovation-anthology-472","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.innovationanthology.com\/import\/2012\/05\/08\/innovation-anthology-472\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation Anthology #472:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/innovationanthology.com\/uploads\/Innovation Anthology 472.mp3\">Download MP3 Link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nThe first ever <b>Nanotechnology Award<\/b> at the the <b>2012 TEC VenturePrize Business Plan Competition<\/b> goes to the Calgary company,  <b>Parvus Therapeutics Inc<\/b>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nParvus is commercializing a breakthrough technology that could treat and potentially<b> cure many auto-immune diseases.<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAccording to company President and CEO <b>Phil Coggins, PhD<\/b>, the nanoparticles or navacims are coated immune system proteins that target specific diseases.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd they were discovered quite by accident by Dr. Pere Santamaria at the University of Calgary.\n<\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nPHIL COGGINS: <\/b><em>When Pere was trying to do an MRI essentially of the pancreas, he made an MRI contrast agent, an iron oxide nano particle.  And in order to kind of get it to go where he wanted it to go, the pancreas, he coated it with proteins which are specific for diabetes.    And the imaging experiments worked .  There was just one kind of big problem.
